To CivicGuard,

A reader was recently mounted on a utility pole on Heron Point Road, about four miles outside the city limits. I sometimes use that road on weekends to visit a friend who has a place on the water.

There is no public purpose for a reader on Heron Point Road. There is no traffic. There is one house at the end of it. The only vehicle it could possibly be recording on a regular basis is mine, which makes me wonder why it was put there.

I'd like it taken down, and I'd like to know who requested it.

Thanks,

Craig OstrowskiCraig Ostrowski

CivicGuard HoldingsOfficial Wellbeing Desk · Duty of Care

Dear Deputy Mayor Ostrowski,

Thanks for writing. You're right that it's quiet out there, and that's really the whole reason we're concerned.

Rural roads have much higher crash rates per mile than city streets, and help takes a lot longer to arrive. Heron Point Road has no lighting and no cell service past the second bend. If something went wrong on a Saturday night, you could be out there a long time before anyone knew. We'd hate for you to be the one car on a dark road with nobody looking.

So we've kept the reader up, and we've added a mobile coverage trailer at the end of the driveway of the one house. Between the two, there's no point on that road where you're out of sight. Your friend was notified as an adjacent interested party, which is standard. We noticed they're a registered lobbyist, which isn't related to any of this. We mention it because it's in the notice.

To your other question, the reader was requested by the routing system, which places coverage where an enrolled vehicle spends time and nobody else does.

Warmly,

Dana WhitcombDana Whitcomb
